6-9 February 2025
Indigo+Madder's presentation brings together new paintings, drawings and sculptures by Anjali Kasturi (b.1996, Montreal, lives and works in Montreal, Canada), Sameen Agha (b. 1991, lives and works in Lahore, Pakistan), Shailee Mehta (b. 1998, lives and works in Goa, India) and Vasudha Kapadia (b. 1995, lives and works in Lugano, Switzerland) that consider gender, memory and materiality. The artists use concepts of embodiment and self representation to interrogate patriarchal views, find connections with nature and imagine new landscapes. Mehta debuts a series of new drawings and paintings that draw links between the female body and nature. In some works, figures seem immersed in the environment, while in others, hybrid urban and natural landscapes seem to be projecting out of the frame. Agha’s new installations and drawings explore the inner, emotional landscape of loss and identity by complicating the notion of home. Using architectural materials such as marble and metal, the works explore ideas of transformation to encapsulate the realm of emotions into solid matter, while playing with concepts of monumentality and remembrance. Kapadia's practice employs slow processes of drawing, to work through personal experiences and societal conditions; the anxieties, observations and desires that emerge therefrom. With a focus on texture and materiality, Kasturi employs translucent surfaces, muted tones, and delicate carved line-work, creating works that seem suspended between states of being. All four artists excavate and subvert deep-set patriarchal narratives by creating their own spaces of comfort and catharsis.
