Tenzing Dakpa

[b. 1985, India] lives and works between Sikkim, New Delhi and Goa. For Dakpa “picture-making makes the world visible”. In his work he often explores spaces of comfort, which become a “repository for dialogues of alienation”. Dealing with narratives of returning Tibetan migrants, the photographer often returns to the hotel owned by his own family. Dakpa currently lives and works in Goa, where he moved from Rhode Island. His most recent work explores land reclamation, forest clearing, burning and the regeneration, as well as other ecological phenomena through images and sound-based installations. Dakpa’s photobook The Hotel was published by Steidl in 2020.

Dakpa is a graduate of College of Art, University of Delhi (BFA, 2009) and Rhode Island School of Design (MFA Photography, 2016). His solo Weather Report opens at Experimenter, Kolkata in May 2024. His works have been exhibited at: Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai, 5th Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2022-23; Singapore International Photo Festival, Singapore, 2020; Indigo+Madder, London, 2019; Peckham 24, London, 2019; Asia House, London, 2018; FotoFest Houston Biennial, Texas, 2018; Clamp Art Gallery, New York City in 2016; Lamar Dodd School of Art, Georgia, 2016; Sol Koffler Gallery, Rhode Island, 2015.
